cannabidiol reduces blood pressure in new 2020 medical study results title graphic

Does CBD Lower Blood Pressure?

Yes, CBD can lower blood pressure after a single dose according to a placebo controlled 2020 medical study. A 600 mg dose of CBD oil lowered blood pressure significantly for individuals at rest and under stressful conditions.

However, CBD benefits for lowering blood pressure at rest stopped after 7 days due to a developed tolerance to CBD. Interestingly, CBD’s ability to lower blood pressure under stress conditions persisted beyond 7 days and continued for the length of the study. So, CBD appears to lower blood pressure under stressful conditions even after a tolerance has developed but loses its effectiveness with individuals under nonstressful conditions.

CBD also showed significant cardiovascular benefits for study participants with vascular disease. A 600 mg per day dose of CBD oil reduced arterial stiffness and improved endothelial function according to the study published in the British Journal Of Clinical Pharmacology.

Study summary:

  • A single 600 mg dose of CBD lowered blood pressure at rest and during simulated stress
  • CBD’s ability to lower blood pressure at rest ends after 7 days
  • CBD’s ability to lower blood pressure during stressful conditions continues indefinitely
  • CBD has significant vascular health benefits

CBD Blood Pressure Study: Results

  • A single dose of 600 mg CBD oil significantly reduced blood pressure at rest in a randomized, placebo‐controlled, double‐blind, parallel study.  However, this effect ended after 7 days of repeated dosing.  It is believed that accumulated tolerance to CBD is the reason for the benefit termination.  (1)

  • In the context of simulated stress, patients had lower blood pressure readings after being administered CBD.  Unlike the above short term benefits, this cardiovascular benefit continued indefinitely even after regular dosing beyond 7 days.  (2)

  • For participants with vascular disease, 7-day treatment of CBD reduced artery stiffness and improved endothelial function (a cardiovascular disease risk factor). (3)

  • “Within the CBD group, repeated dosing reduced arterial stiffness by day 7 (pulse wave velocity; MD -0.44 m/s, P = .05) and improved endothelial function (flow mediation dilatation, MD +3.5%, P = .02, n = 6 per group), compared to day 1.”

CBD Blood Pressure Study: Summary

  • Previous medical studies show that short-term administration of cannabidiol oil lowered blood pressure in men.
  • The goal of this study was to assess whether the long-term administration of CBD oil lowers blood pressure in men.

Study Design

  • In a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, parallel study 26 healthy men were given 600 mg CBD orally or placebo for seven days.
  •

  • Cardiovascular parameters were assessed in participants at rest and during simulated stress after one CBD dose and after repeated CBD doses administered daily over 7 days.
  •

  • Cardiovascular parameters were measured using Finometer, Vicorder and Duplex ultrasound.

Results After Single CBD 600 mg Oral Dose

  • Evaluated at rest: CBD reduced mean arterial pressure significantly (P = .04, two-way ANOVA, mean difference (MD) -2 mmHg, 95% CI -3.6 to -0.3)
  •

  • Evaluated under simulated stress: Participants had lower systolic blood pressure (P = .001, two-way ANOVA, MD -6 mmHg, 95% CI -10 to -1)

Results after repeated CBD 600 mg Oral Dose

  • Evaluated at rest: CBD did not reduce mean arterial pressure after 7 days of dosing.
  • Evaluated under simulated stress: Participants had lower systolic blood pressure (P = .02, two-way ANOVA, MD -5.7 mmHg, 95% CI -10 to -1)
  • 7 days of CBD dosing increased internal carotid artery diameter (MD +0.55 mm, P = .01)
  • 7 days of CBD dosing reduced arterial stiffness by day 7 (pulse wave velocity; MD -0.44 m/s, P = .05)
  • 7 days of CBD dosing improved endothelial function (flow mediation dilatation, MD +3.5%, P = .02, n = 6 per group)

Conclusion

“CBD [lowers blood pressure] at rest after a single dose but the effect is lost after seven days of treatment (tolerance); however, [lowered blood pressure] during stress persists. The reduction in arterial stiffness and improvements in endothelial function after repeated CBD dosing are findings that warrant further investigation in populations with vascular diseases.”
